Jesus Is The Reason For The Season   Comments Comments

"For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."
(Isaiah 9:6)

How precious it is to hold a tiny baby! I have eleven grandchildren, and I remember holding each one of them for the first time. So sweet and innocent. Such a miracle! These babies are my grandchildren–my children's children–and my heart is so full of love for each one of them. Watching them grow from that tiny package of potential into children of the Lord is one of the greatest joys God has given me.

This is the time of year that the whole world celebrates the beauty of one particular newborn. Mary and Joseph felt the warmth of holding this babe for the first time. The shepherds stood in awe of the child. The magi sought diligently to find where the baby was. Yes, this newborn brought wonder to their lives. More than that, He brought joy to the whole world!

While it's customary to celebrate the birthday of people we love, honoring the birth of one individual for some 2,000 years–generation after generation all over the world–speaks volumes about this special person. The greatest gift ever bestowed on man, the Son of the eternal, magnificent, all-powerful God, equal to His Father in all ways, humbled Himself and came to the earth He created. Jesus chose to become like one of His creations and walk among those who would reject and hate Him. Such love was not in vain. He fulfilled His purpose to redeem His beloved people. The baby Jesus, lying in a wooden manger, was a gift for all humanity. And from a wooden cross, He gave the gift of eternal life for all who would believe on Him.

Simeon, who faithfully anticipated the Messiah's birth, was among the first to celebrate Christmas. He saw the baby Jesus as a reason to rejoice. God had promised Simeon that he would see the promised Messiah before he died and God came kept His word. The old man held Jesus in the temple and praised God saying,

"My eyes have seen Your salvation
Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples
A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of Your people Israel." (Luke 2:30-32)

Let us join Simeon in celebrating the Christ-child, our light and salvation. Never before and never again will there be such a glorious birth. Yes, Jesus is the reason for the season.

This Week
Spend time each day reading and meditating on the Christmas story. Praise God for His love in sending His Son. Allow the wonder of the season to drive you to worship the Savior.

Prayer
"Father, restore to me the joy of Christmas. Deliver me from the stress and hassle the world places on the holiday season and help me focus my mind on the real reason we celebrate."
