Washington, D.C. - Today, Family Research Council (FRC) President Tony Perkins released the following statement praising the introduction of a resolution by Missouri State Representative Jane Cunningham that urges the U.S. to approve the Marriage Protection Amendment which would define marriage in the United States as a union of one man and one woman:

"We applaud Rep. Jane Cunningham for introducing this resolution in support of an U.S. Constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man, one woman. As we’ve seen, the courts pose a direct threat to the will of the people and activist judges are making decisions that rightfully belong in the hands of the voters. Despite continued action by state officials to pass state resolutions, we see an even greater need for a Marriage Protection Amendment.

"There is a sense of urgency across this country to protect traditional marriage. Already 19 states have passed state resolutions into law and the number is growing. This should send a clear message to Washington and to Congress that U.S. citizens are in strong support of protecting this most sacred institution.

"As state officials and legislatures lead the way, so should the United States Congress protect their efforts by passing Senate Joint Resolution 1 this June."
