CWA Says Shame on SIECUS for Calling Abstinence Programs Extreme   Comments Comments

Washington, D.C. — Concerned Women for America (CWA) regrets the distortion throughout the recently released report from the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) that evaluates the new federal Community-Based Abstinence Education programs (CBAE) and labels them as “extreme,” calls them a “magic elixir,” and says that the grants are a “gross misuse of taxpayer funds.”

Dr. Janice Shaw Crouse, Senior Fellow of CWA’s Beverly LaHaye Institute, said, “SIECUS complains that the guiding assumption of the new funding is that teen sexual abstinence improves teens’ preparation for stable marriage. Well, of course! Yes, it does, as data clearly indicate. By any measure, the outcomes are more positive when teens save sex for marriage. Early sexual activity exacerbates any problem associated with teenagers.”

Crouse added, “SIECUS also complains about the evaluation of abstinence programs. It is appallingly brazen for anyone today to hold up peer review as the best evaluation of research when every week there is a new scandal related to so-called scientific, academic or peer-reviewed research.”

SIECUS ridicules abstinence programs for being a “cure-all” because they rightly claim that delaying sexual activity improves life outcomes, financial well-being and marital stability. Further, SIECUS notes that abstinence programs teach that avoiding sexual activities increases the potential of avoiding other high-risk behavior (drug use, etc.) and helps teens to develop discipline, self-awareness and goal-setting.

Crouse asked, “And, what is wrong with those outcomes? This report reveals exactly how out-of-touch the left is with American values. Most people will read their complaints and wonder just what’s the problem? Do we want to teach students something other than that the standard for sexual activity is within the context of a mutually monogamous relationship between a man and a woman? Do we want to teach students anything other than that a healthy marriage is beneficial to society (increases the life span, provides a higher standard of living and greater sexual satisfaction)? Do we really want to teach students anything other than that personal character can be strengthened in deciding to remain sexually abstinent before marriage?”
