Focus on the Family Mourns 33rd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade   Comments Comments

"Everyone loses in an abortion culture"

Colorado Springs, Colo. — Focus on the Family joins millions of Americans in mourning the 33rd anniversary of the tragic 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decisions, Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, and the devastating impact of these rulings on women and their children.

"Each year, we learn more about the harmful effects of abortion on women," said Focus on the Family Senior Policy Analyst for Bioethics Carrie Gordon Earll. "In the last nine months alone, published studies indicate that women having abortions face higher risks for substance abuse, longstanding mental anguish and suicide. Another study was conducted by an abortion supporter who set out to prove that women suffer no adverse effects after abortion. Researcher David Fergusson found the opposite: Women having abortions had higher rates of mental-health problems than women who gave birth.

"It’s time for society to recognize that abortion harms women and kills their preborn children – around one million in the last year alone," Earll said. "Everyone loses in an abortion culture where women — due to circumstances — often feel that they have no choice but to abort. All choices are not equal, especially when considering the possible physical and emotional trauma that can accompany abortion."

As in past years, Focus on the Family seeks to empower women facing unintended pregnancies with more life-affirming options by partnering with churches and nonprofit community-pregnancy centers to sponsor Sanctity of Human Life week (January 15-22, 2006).
